Well I loved the early 80s. The real glam stuff in the 80s was in the early part, none of that "hair band" shit(yes, I know the term was originally intended as a slur). Sunset Strip, plus big scenes in London, Tokyo, and CaNaDa.

I myself loved NWOBHM, in a large part due to the absolute hatred of it by the punks. As far as I'm concerned, Silverwing were gods because of "Flashbomb Fever". Music and image, instead of shitty clothing, equipment, and attitudes.

As I've said, I can forgive some of the punks because of what they did later. Mick Rossi, Bernie Torme, Ray Zell amongst others.

Wishbone Ash, when Laurie Wisefeld was in the band? Ever heard the first Home album, with Laurie and Cliff Williams, later of AC/DC?

Honestly? I've never heard ANY Wishbone Ash! LOL! I just remember the pix from Kerrang and all my other Metal mags back when I was a kid. I always figured they were a "Zepplin" style band, and that always kept me from them.

[Hi guys, I stumbled upon this message board and I just couldn't believe it, it brought back so many memories from my drunken dayz in London. I used to play gtr with Buttz with The Last of the Teenage Idols (Daniele here, the Italian widdly-widdly guitarist)... reading posts from Paul from the Roses and reading about Shuff (with whom I'm still in touch with), Julian (I remember sleeping on their flat's floor for months on end, drivin' them nuts with my endless senseless gtr practicing), reading about Buttz (with whom I'm DYING to get in touch with!!!)... ...brought more than a tear to my eyes.
Carl, if you could e-mail me Buttz's interview I'd be eternally grateful! I'm sure that if he mentions me he'd be to slag me off!!! If you or anybody else needs anything from LOTTI I have loads of stuff that I kept dearly through all these years... videos, CDs, demotapes, articles, flyers, loads of pictures... just let me know.
Lotz of love,
Daniele

<font size="3" face="Arial">Hell's teeth, hello Daniele!! How are ya? Haven't seen you since the last gig you did in Bradford - you ate half my crisps!
The Idols were never the same without you, man, the guy who took over from you had a much less "rock'n'roll" sort of guitar style, he was a lot more "Metal" in his playing. Why did you leave?
If you've any videos of the days you were with the Idols knocking about I'd love to see them. Cheers!

Hi Lee!
This is getting unreal! I can't believe there's people out there remembering the Idols so well. Last year I got together with Shuff (after 10 years i hadn't seen him) and we spent all night (literally) talking about the Idols.
Those days I'll never forget... well except what I forgot rightaway 'cause I was too drunk.
That kind of includes Bradford, where me and Vom played our last gig with the Idols. I never got so drunk before or since, everybody was buying me and Vom rounds and I'm kind of still trying to recover!
Why did I leave? I can't actually remember the reason to tell you the truth... but it was so difficult, being totally skint (and I mean totally: when Kerrang put my 3 favourite records on their chart page - they had this "Star choice" thing and I was there with Richard Marx and a guy from Voivod - I had to ask 90p from Shuff 'cause I just didn't have the money to buy it!)... and all the record companies always interested and coming to gigs and never wanting to sign us... we were selling out the Marquee regularly and once even drawing over 1000 headlining the Astoria (Steevi Jaimz supported us)... but they still felt we wouldn't sell records... maybe - as I see it now - they realized we were 5 nutters, each of us in his own way... and probably impossible to deal properly with... and I guess they had a point!
Anyway maybe all this wasn't the reason I left, maybe not, I can't honestly remember, I just decided to make a change... we had a summer 89 tour already booked and me and Vom did it nevertheless and we had the greatest time ever!
I have a fantastic video of the Idols (we used to sell it at gigs), it's over an hour long with footage from the Astoria, the Marquee, an interview with Finnish TV featuring us 5 totally pissed and some bizarre off-stage antics including some hilarious stuff from Buttz's warped mind!
I'll see if I can make you a copy, I only have one VCR at home so I'll have to find somebody that can do it for me. Write me a line if you're interested!

Daniele

I always thought it was a travesty that the Idols never got a proper deal. You had some fantastic songs (some of which, as far as I know, never even got recorded - "Outta Here" being one) but I suspect that the record companies couldn't take you seriously because you were so blatantly a "fun" band. It's a shame, you were all great players and Buttz was one of the greatest frontmen I've ever seen, and he always remembered us punters.
Have you heard anything from Vom lately? I think he's living in Germany and playing in Die Toten Hosen now. Funny, I saw his first AND last Idols gigs...the first was in Leeds, the last Bradford.
I'd love to see the video (I don't remember it being on sale, but I still have the demo and my Idols t-shirt!); if you would trust your copy to the postal service I can copy it and send it back to you, but I can understand if you wouldn't want to do that.

<font size="3" face="Arial">Hi Lee, I just answered to you privately about the video.
Yes, the "fun band" aspect didn't help in getting major labels to take the Idols seriously, but there was more to it than that, I think. You should have met our managers!!! Unfortunately most stories are really unprintable... I'd just say there's no way anybody on earth would have signed anybody with two managers like that... they made US seem positively sane!!
Yes, Vom, he's with Die Toten Hosen I met him in London last year and he was exactly the same! He even had the same leather jacket!!... Me and Shuff were talking about doing an Idols one off reunion gig and - in true Idols style - everybody agreed entusiastically and nothing happened!!! But you never know...

Lots of love,

Daniele

As far as your managers go, I remember "Terry Waite", he was a strange bloke...

If the reunion ever does happen, I'll be at the front for definite! Whatever happened to Hovis Presley, anyway? He's the only one of the original Idols I've not heard any more about.
